Having already eaten at Giraffe a few times I sort've knew what I was expecting - food that was a little over-priced, with reasonable cocktails and lovely if over friendly waitresses. This visit was to be a surprising one. The service as we walked in was prompt and lovely, the waitress had a nice smile on her which is always an encouraging sign. We were shuffled through the restaurant and chose where we wanted to sit. We quickly chose the drinks and the food - so far, so good.
The drinks came first, tap water with no lemon (as asked), a glass of coke with a lemon and a smoothie. The waiter who delivered the smoothie was extremely friendly and started the evening off brilliantly. We eventually decided to punt for the starter and a main for 9.95 which seemed like reasonable value. We went for flat bread drizzled in olive oil with some fancy pesto. I was unimpressed - the food layout was above average but nothing special. The flat bread was dry, the olive oil tasted uninspiring and the pesto, well.. was over-priced and tasted far too much of olives. I wouldn't recommend this, not at all - no.
The main then came - I had 'home-made fish and chips'. I think this can be summed up in a sentence - the worst fish and chips I've ever eaten. I'm unsure if it was battered in beer as I couldn't quite taste anything off the fish. It was bland, plain and needed flavour. The chips needed to be fried for a few more minutes as they were yet to be crispy or chip-like, tasting like warm potatoes covered in salt and pepper.
All in all I was disappointed, minus the smoothie which was above average.
